Lord Zedd cast a dark shadow over the galaxy when he reviewed Rita's progress and deemed her unworthy of serving him. He cast her away and took over as head rival against Zordon's forces.

Zedd's forces were quick to render the Dinozords useless, forcing Zordon to syphon their remaining power into backups known as Thunderzords. This was the first of many obstacles Zedd would have to overcome in order to prevail where Rita failed.

To erase Rita's humiliation, Zedd concentrated his efforts on the Green Ranger powers. Sending monster after monster to drain Tommy's powers, Zedd ultimately succeeded. It was one Ranger down and five to go.

As the battles grew grimmer, hope arrived in a white light. The White Ranger was created in a hidden dimension within the Command Center. His debute meant Jason's days as leader were over, and Zedd's streak of terror was coming to a halt. Now ready for anything, the White Ranger revealed his identity to his team. It was none other than the former Green Ranger, Tommy.

More changes were to be made with the Ranger roster. Jason, Zack and Trini had been chosen to attend an international peace conference, which required their full attention in Switzerland. For their final mission, the three would have to obtain the Sword of Light from a dead planet in order to transfer powers to three new Rangers. They got the sword seconds before Zedd destroyed the planet with his colossal zord Serpentara, and the next chapter was written with Rocky, Adam and Aisha as the Rangers' respective replacements.

Zedd's encounters with the Rangers were taking its toll on his body. Aiming to rest his body for hundreds of years, Zedd fell into a deep slumber. However, it was the perfect oppurtunity for Rita to exact her revenge.

Having escaped her prison, Rita poisoned Zedd with an elixur that rendered his mind to her molding. Having him believe he was in love with her, Rita was back at the helm and running the show. The two married and combined their powers against the Rangers. And only through very decisive teamwork were the Rangers able to hold their own.
